UGSP Stage 2 Step 3 Academic Development

a.) List any classes you are struggling with and detail your specific issues.

• Do you struggle with time on exams?
• Do you find yourself forgetting assignments?
• Do you feel the material in the course needs to be better communicated?
• Are there disruptions within your classroom that are causing you to be unable to concentrate?
• Are there issues at home that distract you or interrupt your time for homework?

b.) Brainstorm how to work around your academic challenges to diminish any negative consequences. Write a list of possible solutions.

c.) Research tutoring options or potential teacher resources that might assist you if your struggles are academic.

d.) If your struggles are social or more due to distracting elements, try and meet with the teacher to see if you can change seats or receive the type of accommodation you need.

e.) Determine your overall unweighted GPA (grades without any point boost for Honors, AP, Dual Enrollment, IB, or Cambridge) by giving yourself the corresponding point value for each course and then adding them together and dividing the total by the total number of courses applying the following scale:

Letter grade/percentage           GPA Points
A (95-100%)                                    4.0
A- (90-94%)                                     3.7
B+ (87-89%)                                    3.3
B (83-86%)                                      3.0
B- (80-82%)                                    2.7
C+ (77-79%)                                    2.5
C (73-76%)                                      2.0
C- (70-72%)                                     1.7
D+ (67-69%)                                   1.5
D (63-66%)                                     1.0

The universities will examine your unweighted and weighted GPA, including any bonus points awarded based on the coursework’s difficulty level.

f.) The grade point average successful international student applicants have is between a 3.3-4.0 unweighted GPA. Are you nearing the top of the average, middle, or near the bottom of the average applicant pool?

g.) If you fall out of this range or near the lower end of this range, are there steps you can take to improve your in-school grades?

h.) Could you add AP or college courses to supplement your GPA to elevate it overall?
